UPDATE: The winner has been selected by random.org. Congratulations to Kathy Pease! Your prize is on the way!

Have you ever reached mid-morning completely zapped of energy only to remember that you forgot to eat breakfast? It's not coincidental that they call it the "most important meal of the day." There have been numerous studies demonstrating the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast. A 1998 study showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school. Compared to children who skip breakfast, children who eat breakfast score higher on tests, are less likely to miss class or be tardy, have fewer reported discipline problems, and make fewer trips to the office.

While most of us would probably prefer to sit down to a nice hot bowl of steaming oatmeal in the morning, the morning rush to get everyone out the door often robs us of this healthy option. I must confess that most days by the time I get to breakfast it takes all my energy to pour a bowl of cold cereal for myself. And the kids, well...they actually prefer the cold cereal. That being the case, I was glad to hear the steps that General Mills is taking to make breakfast cereals a healthier option for families. They have committed to further reduce sugars in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of suger per serving while increasing key ingredients such as calcium and vitamin D and providing whole grain. When fresh-squeezed orange juice and oatmeal just aren't on the menu, I'm glad to know I can feel a little less guilty about putting a bowl of cold cereal on the table.

Thanks to the wonderful people at General Mills and MyBlogSpark.com, right now if you visit here you will find a $1 off coupon for one of four General Mills cereals. They have provided me with product samples and the above information about General Mills' new efforts, and that is not all they have provided. They have generously given me a little something extra that I've chosen to pass on to one of my readers here. So, without further ado...

One winner will receive two manufacturer coupons, each good for one free General Mills cereal of your choice up to $6.00.
